At my middle school, which serves a large population of Hispanic students, I have 24 English Language Learners. The students are in grades 5 through 8. While most of them are fluent in conversation, they struggle with academic language. Many come from homes in which parents only speak in their native language. Thus, the students' practice of English is limited to the school.
