Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My favorite hashtags to use on Instagram are I love my students and I love my job. I am the luckiest person in the world because I get to teach art in Paterson, New Jersey. My students never cease to amaze me. Unfortunately, the many issues that plague our American inner cities, such as poverty, drug use, gang violence, teenage pregnancy, and so much more impact my students every day.
Last school year, we were forced into crisis teaching due to the pandemic.
The pandemic put a spotlight on all the inequities that already existed in our country. My students fell further behind academically, but tried as best they could with what they had access to. My hope is for them to continue to explore their stories and share those stories through visual materials.
My Project
Our Title I school’s art education program needs your help because we need to support our student progress while at home learning. Your donation will make a difference because it will enable my students to explore various materials so that they can continue to develop their visual languages. Exploring materials is a necessary part of development as our children grow and learn all the ways in which they can share their important stories with the world around them. When children are able to choose from materials to represent their narratives, they are developing unique repertoires that will serve them their entire lives.
The donations to this project will help to build students’ artistic development and support their social-emotional well-being.
Much of the world turned to creative means while processing the pandemic and living in quarantine. Our media was saturated with coloring book images, paint by number projects, new music, new creative writing, and more. People find comfort in culture and positive self-expression. Your donations will support the well-being of our children while also promoting a healthy expression along a normative trajectory.
With your help, students will be able to explore sculpting materials, such as model magic. After exploring this new material, our fifth grade students, for example, will invent and build an original tool in response to COVID-19. Also, our second grade students will explore scraps of wood before innovating and constructing their own special sanctuary safe spaces. All of our students will have an opportunity to explore and use watercolor paint, tempera paint, collage materials (paper, glue, scissors), and drawing tools with your help.
