My Students

We have a remarkable student body. Of note is the fact that they rank among the most diverse populations of elementary students in the city of Springfield, a city that is largely ethnically homogeneous. Even more noteworthy are the significant academic gains made by students in math and reading each year, and this despite all odds. Those odds are remarkable in their own right, as a considerable percentage of students live with the threat of transiency looming over them. Students regularly share the details of leaving their residence in the middle of the night to live with a close family member or family friend, taking only the clothes they’re wearing (often pajamas), and, if they’re lucky, packing all they own in storage sheds before it’s thrown out on the curb. What’s more, even if and when a student’s living situation is stationary, over 90% qualify for free and/or reduced lunches, a state and federal marker of not just poverty but extreme and generational poverty. To witness, then, the resiliency of these remarkable students despite remarkable odds is something to behold, as it requires a courage of which the general citizenry of this city is not cognizant.

My Project

While the engine of education - teachers that teach and students that learn - hasn't changed, the vehicle certainly has. Technology drives instruction. Still, students can't learn if their computer technology isn't charged.

Weller's student population - transient and poverty stricken - are especially at risk of returning to school with a dead device, if not a broken or lost device.

Charging stations in the classroom will eliminate loss, reduce accidental damage, assure that every device is fully charged each morning, and assist teachers and students in their educational travels.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
