In our school district, we have a diverse group of students with varying needs. About 46% of our students are Latino, several learning a second language other than what they speak at home.
My school is rich in diversity and needs of students!
Our students are excited to learn and sometimes do not have the means to get all the supplies they need to be successful. I appreciate all of the kind donations to allow every student and teacher to have the essential supplies for middle school.
My Project
This student-led project started when one of my students, Nora, asked about the sequel to a book in my classroom library. She described Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi as a compelling, engaging, fantasy based in West Africa and a book she felt a part of.
Since then, Nora has worked on her own and with me after school to design this book wishlist so more students can see themselves in the books they read.
Some of these books were personal favorites for her, such as I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, Dear Martin, and the graphic adaptation to Speak. Other books were added based a combination of seeking to represent the diverse experiences of our students and student requests.
Every book on this list represents a section of the population we teach in Richfield. While this is not an exhaustive list, we hope to continue to build the representation in our little library and welcome any suggestions of your favorite reads!
