My Students

I have a group of 18 second graders who live in New Mexico. Our classroom is bright with many smiling faces. Every student in our classroom receives free and reduced breakfast. No matter students' life situations, students find a safe, nurturing, and loving environment in our classroom. It is also a place where I try to provide my students with many opportunities to learn creatively, courageously, and collaboratively.

In our guided reading time, my students eagerly await the next teacher- selected books and their preference is always nonfiction- biographies, animals, places, and science books are their favorites!

My students love when I change our guided reading units to focus on non-fiction and it makes guided reading 10X more fun when students are thrilled about the books!

My Project

Our classroom has really enjoyed the National Geographic books and the Step Into Reading nonfiction readers. These readers are focused, highly engaging, and cover a broad range of nonfiction to diversify my students' background knowledge. The books also range in a variety of levels so my students can read at appropriate levels.

Guided reading allows students to each have a copy of the text, read independently and then practice reading skills together with verbal and written comprehension.

This reading practice has drastically increased my students' reading achievement. However, the nonfiction books we have in our classroom are very limited and we are unable to fully integrate nonfiction into our guided reading consistently for all my different reading groups.

Having these sets of nonfiction would allow me to pull more non-fiction in our guided reading groups! This large set of readers would provide 45 different nonfiction topics and would last us 30 weeks of nonfiction reading to be better integrated into our guided reading! This would make a SIGNIFICANT change in our reading achievement and give us a year filled with rich literature and learning!
