Nonfiction to Explore the People We Want to Be!

Help me give my students updated nonfiction books at their grade level. These books will give their in personal areas of interest so they can take their ELA learning into their real life!

My Project

K-2 students are focused on informational texts and nonfiction books. Each grade in this band is completing a separate, unique project within our library class. These books would become part of their dedicated nonfiction section, updating collection items... many of which were published in the 1980s! These books would also create opportunities for connections to our school's building focus in the arts.

Each grade's project connects their informational text learning in their home classroom with their personal interests in their own life.

Kindergarten is learning to navigate both fiction and nonfiction using a mini-database that guides them through series and topics. In our nonfiction section, many topics aren't represented that would be high-interest for our students. Students then analyze each other's selections and determine if the book is fiction or nonfiction. Each kindergarten student has a special bookmark where we track their selections each week.

1st and 2nd grade students often begin to lose interest in nonfiction books. We will have a stations day where students will rotate in groups to interact with bins of books on specific topics. Students will learn to tell jokes, read poems, draw with the help of a book, explore the word, and learn about different animals. Following this hands of exploration, all books will become available in their nonfiction section. They will use their ipads to track different learning, complete activities, and draw their art.
