Nonfiction Required for Ravenous Readers!

Help me give my students the nonfiction magazines Science Spin and Scholastic News.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Maye's classroom raised $597

This project is fully funded

My Students

My young students need nonfiction magazines so they can learn about their world and the fascinating science behind it. Our students are excited to learn, curious, innovative, playful, kind and fun! Our classroom is comprised of forty-eight 2nd and 3rd-grade students at a charter school in southern California. We do a lot of projects with partners or in cooperative groups of four so students learn how to work as a team.

We are also a magnet school so students from many different backgrounds and cultures get to know each other.

We set high standards and enjoy the journey to reach them.

My Project

The most interesting and inspiring stories are the ones from real life! During Reader's Workshop, our students will read Scholastic News & Science Spin and get to know the world outside their classroom door. They will discover why millions of honeybees have disappeared and why there is good news for them now. They'll learn about the Zingu River, South America's largest country, and the Amazon Rainforest. They'll read a new analysis of moon rocks and what interesting clues about the ancient history of the earth it reveals. They'll meet fifteen year old Ethan King, the founder of Charity Ball, an organization that raises money to hand-deliver soccer balls to kids in developing countries. The students will discover how they too can be like Ethan, a person who makes a difference, and leave this world a little better than they found it. The Scholastic News & Science Spin magazines will entice them to learn even more about the world, the people in it, and how things work. It will connect some students to their passion and spark a lifelong love of reading in others.
