We are an Intermediate SLD class, grades third through fifth, at a Title 1 school in Nevada. Our school is nestled in the lower foothills just east of Las Vegas. Close to 46% of the students at our school qualifies for free or reduced lunch.
We are a dynamic group of learners, where we laugh almost as much as we learn.
Although my students have a variety of disabilities we work hard to celebrate our abilities every day (and we celebrate every day)!
My Project
The opportunity to utilize the Scholastic News and Science Spin in my classroom will give my students the opportunities to practice and strengthen their nonfiction reading comprehension skills. Additionally, providing my students with high interest, nonfiction reading materials can get even the most reluctant readers interested in reading.
The ability to read and understand nonfiction text is an important life skill.
After a student graduates and continues on into adulthood, they are presented with many nonfiction text to read and comprehend such as job applications, newspapers, and instructional manuals. My students struggle with reading comprehension skills and need the additional support and practice to be successful. With your donations, we will be able to make meaningful connections to reading thus having the opportunity to be successful in the real world.
