My students need more nonfiction books to increase reading interest. I will pair them with fiction books and use them to compare fiction and nonfiction.
My classroom is a place that is safe fun and engaging. Every morning I greet hug and or high five each child as they enter. Students are then given the opportunity to greet and get to know their peers better through morning greeting, news/announcements, sharing, and a cooperative activity.
My classroom is currently made up of 26 children.
All of the learners in my room have different abilities and personal strengths. In our room we have students on IEP's for learning and or social and emotional disabilities. The students enjoy working together collaboratively although it can be a challenge for some. We work through such challenges through cooperative activities and social stories. It is important to keep all learners engaged at all times. The children in my room has expressed the need for more books to read during their silent reading times that are nonfiction.
My Project
The materials purchased will be used to pair with other stories that are fiction and/or nonfiction to compare and contrast attributes. The books will be used during small group and independent reading activities. They will be used to increase student interest in reading. Studies show that for some learners they become more interested in reading when given more nonfiction books to select.
The books I have selected fall in line with what my students have shown interest in through a class survey on student interest.
While others align with social studies and science standards that are taught in first grade. These books will be used to help build prior knowledge, to help create and understanding of material taught, and to review skills already learned in science and social studies.
