Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are enthusiastic first graders who love to learn and grow their brains. They are in need of more books to support their building of love for learning and reading! Scholars are able to grow a deeper appreciation for reading when they have opportunities to experience high interest non-fiction and fiction texts.

My students are from diverse cultural backgrounds and ethnicity.

Many languages are spoken by students include Spanish, Portuguese, and Igbo. About 80% of students are on free and reduced lunch. Our school is located in a community which is diverse in culture and language. Our families are very supportive and involved in their child's education. Although technology is used in our classroom each day I believe that they can gain a deeper knowledge as well as social emotional skills through the use of more hands on exploratory learning experiences.

My Project

This project will support my scholars with exploring and learning from nonfiction texts. My scholars are at a crucial reading point of their development. We are mastering phonics skills, word solving strategies, and comprehension. Scholars need equal access to nonfiction books as they do fiction. Right now our library is made up of primarily fiction books.

First grade students need access to Nonfiction books in order to build an early love for reading and learning about our world.

Nonfiction texts are important to understand thorough out the rest of their school career, especially to learn more about science topics and history. Help me give students access to non fiction texts to ensure they build a knowledge about a multitude of subjects and begin to practice comprehension strategies for non fiction texts.
