My students need nonfiction texts for our upcoming nonfiction Book Club unit. Our texts need to be engaging as well as varying in difficulty to grant access for our diverse learners.
This year, in addition to teaching third grade special education, I am working as the SETSS specialist in my school, a public school located in Long Island City, Queens, NY. SETSS (which is the acronym for Special Education Teacher Support Services) is a service provided to some of the most struggling students in our school (both academically and emotionally.)
I am teaching SETTS in two sessions, the first session is with students from the lower grades (kindergarten through second grade), and the second is with students from third through fifth grades.
My students in this program not only range in age, but also academic capabilities. Because of this, I'm looking for fun, interactive games and books to engage each of my students at their own instructional levels to help them progress.
My Project
As we are approaching our Nonfiction Book Club Unit, we are noticing our class materials are looking a little lackluster. Our materials are worn out and not very engaging. We need new materials and texts to engage our diverse learners.
Our students will be working together in groups, reading nonfiction texts about animals.
I was hoping to stock our library with new and exciting books such as the National Geographic Kids Series on different animals such as Koalas, Sharks, and Pandas. As the students research and their wealth of information grows, they will work in their groups to collaborate to publish several nonfiction reports.
In addition to interesting books, we are in desperate need of some basic supplies, such as copy paper and pencils. These supplies would go directly to our students for everyday assignments.
We would be ever so grateful if you decide to contribute to helping our class!
