Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently a fourth and fifth grade combination teacher at Grant School in San Lorenzo, CA. I am interested in creating a science unit for my students about the solar system. Fifth grade students are now required to take a science portion of the California Star Test, and I want to make sure they are prepared.
The solar system unit I would like to teach would be a balance of hands on experiments and nonfiction reading and discussion. I find that our textbooks are often too difficult for students to comprehend and I am left without adequate nonfiction resources to help my students.
I would like to develop a classroom library of nonfiction books that would support this unit. These books would span topics such as the planets, the sun and our solar system. The books would be able to meet the needs of the different reading levels as well as being engaging to grab students' attention.
In addition, I would like students examine the concepts of series and parallel circuits, solar energy, wind power, motors, generators, and gear ratios while building a solar racecar. Also, I would like to teach my students about UV rays and the dangers of sun exposure using UV sensitive beads and paper. By doing experiments such as these, I believe my students will be engaged in science and more eager to learn.
We have 3 fifth grade classes (apx. 90) students that would share the materials. I would need 35 books, 6 solar racecar kits, 500 beads and 100 sheets of UV sensitive paper.
I have found that around fifth grade students begin to become turned off of science. I would like to help reverse this trend by providing stimulating expirments and texts that will allow students to take their desire further. Thank you, Ingrid Staley
