My students need engaging nonfiction books to help boost their love of history and their reading comprehension skills, as well as prepare them for state testing, high school, college, and a successful career.
My students are 6th grade Writing, Reading and History students in a public school in California. We have a range of students at all ability levels. They spend half of their school day in my classroom, so we vary our genres of reading to keep them engaged.
We strive to connect the past with the present, and this is where these non-fiction resources can make a world of difference.
All students need opportunities to engage them in reading, and these books will make all the difference in their motivation to read and boost their comprehension, especially in history.
My Project
All of my students want to love to read. Having a classroom library filled with engaging non-ficition books will give each of my classes choices of independent reading novels that will interest and engage them. We are always looking to make connections between our curriculum and the outside world, particularly in history.
We need independent reading books that will engage them, boost their love of reading, and bring the outside world into our classroom.
Our titles include best-sellers like Who Was WIlliam Shakespeare? What Is the Declaration of Independence?, What Is the Statue of Liberty?, What Were the Twin Towers?, Who Was Mother Teresa?, What Was Pearl Harbor? in addition to dozens more. This project will allow me to enrich our classroom library with quality historical non-fiction literature that students could read as part of our cultural studies and exploration of ancient civilizations.
Students could then take Accelerated Reader quizzes about them, which boosts their reading comprehension skills. This will set them up for success in other areas of learning, better prepare them for state testing, as well as high school and beyond.
