This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in an Elementary school and I teach 1st grade. . We serve a large population of low-income students and more than 50% are English Language Learners. This makes for a diverse but challenging population. Our students need access to educational materials because many do not have access to these same materials at home. I want to foster the love for learning in my classroom and have students feel that the classroom is a safe and welcoming space to learn.

My Project

Our school is focusing this year on students being able to pull information such as main idea and key details from non-fiction books. When looking at my classroom library and others, I found we were lacking in non-fiction books that are at the level of a beginning reader. These books are also different than what most of these children have at home or would check out at a library. The ability to read non-fiction books will expose these students to more than what they see and know everyday. My hope with this project is to broaden the horizons about the types of books that children are reading, provide materials that children have the confidence to read on their own at their own level, and to create a love for reading and learning at a young age.
