Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember a time when you read something so interesting from a non-fiction book that you had to tell someone right away. I want my students to be just as engrossed in their books.
I teach a group of fourth graders who are ravenous readers.
They are super eager and excited to learn and read as much as they can. The students come from a high poverty community where there is a high degree of gang presence. Our school is a Title I school with over a majority of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Many of our students speak a language other than English at home and will be the first in their family to go to college.
My Project
Everyday, my students look forward to the 40 minutes dedicated to independent reading. During this time, the students are expected to read books at their level. The reading levels of my class range from Kindergarten to early fifth grade. While I have accumulated many chapter books at various levels, our classroom library lacks non-fiction books, particularly at the 2nd and 3rd grade levels. The books requested cover different topics that are engaging for my students.
In order to become better readers, my students must read a wide variety of books that are at their reading level.
Non-fiction reading is critical to future success, and it is important that my students have access to these texts.
