5th graders are by far the most exciting students. They are on the brink of change as they grow in every way possible. They are the "big kids" and they know it! Most importantly, their minds are like sponges, soaking in everything around them.
As readers, my students love to search through my books looking for something that excites them.
Approximately 80 students a day comb through my books. These 5th graders come from different cultures, economic levels, and different reading levels. Sometimes, it is nearly impossible to meet their reading interests. More than a third of our students come from low income families. Many of them have limited or no access to good literature, and a majority of them read below the expectations of grade 5. Additionally, many speak other languages at home, so reading is an important part of growing their confidence in English. Of course, they start the school year as excited to learn as I am to teach them, but we lack sufficient resources. My hope is to keep the reading spark shining bright for these amazing kids.

My Project
We need more non-fiction books. There needs to be a rich selection of materials to be an active part of the classroom and grow great readers. In our school, we use a curriculum that requires students to provide their own texts and suggests we provide 2500 books. My current classroom library has only 250 books, and it is not meeting the needs of the students.
We need more "Just Right Books." Just right books are books meet the needs of a student's independent reading level.
They are required to bring them to class everyday. Without these books, students are unable to participate fully in class.
