Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

These kids deserve a well-rounded education and they need to learn about their world. I teach in high-need community with little at home parent involvement. My students do not have many experiences outside of the classroom which may expand their minds. I teach first graders that love to learn, but were born into families where survival is the focus of life. Education is important to the parents of my students, however, their child's formal education is, for the most part, in my hands.

This past year, I started to teach my students all about non-fiction books. I tried to find as many books that I could from the library, but the students were unable to read them. I could see in their faces how excited they were to learn about new animals, insects, and our world. Unfortunately, without these books in bins at their level, the knowledge is just out of their reach. These first graders do not make connections to their learning unless it is hands on and they are exploring on their own. My students love the non-fiction books because they get to be scientists and explorers. I would love for them to be able to pick up a book from the bin at their level and make all kinds of new discoveries!

I need a classroom library of non-fiction books, not for myself, but in bins at the levels of my students so that they can read the books on their own. I want them to be able to go up to the level of bin they can read, choose a book about a topic they want to learn more about and then make their own learning meaningful. These non-fiction leveled readers in book bins will allow my students to learn information that has always been impossible without these resources.

Your help will ensure that my students will receive the education that they deserve. I see how excited my students get about non-fiction books and I know their excitement for education would grow if they received these leveled readers. It would give them the opportunity to explore and learn on their own terms.
