My Students

Our students are coming to school every day looking for ways to connect what they love with what they have to learn. They are happy, despite difficult backgrounds, and books can often provide mental refuge from tough circumstances.

Many students come from low income families, are on the free and reduced lunch program, and/or have been exposed to drugs that run rampant in the community.

Despite everything they smile, work hard, and try. I've seen students who dislike reading become avid readers because they found something that appealed to them. They are amazing!

My Project

Our elementary school library books are arranged with only the spines showing, making it difficult for younger students and struggling readers to find what they want or need. This is especially true when they only have a 10-minute checkout window. This can lead students to feel more stressed and further discouraged that they can't find what they are looking for.

Providing bins will allow these students to easily find a category of non-fiction so all they need to do is flip through the books to find the one they want!

Not to mention the increase in self-confidence and fun they will have when they can see other books within the same subject area they might not have otherwise chosen!
