Non-Boring Non-Fiction

My students need 40+ exciting new non-fiction books on a wide range of topics from star gazing to the D-Day landings.

My Students

Non-fiction is the poor, forgotten stepchild of literacy instruction, but I plan on resurrecting my students' interest in this exciting genre of books. To entice my students to put down their comics and fantasy novels, I need some new, tempting non-fiction books. Learning through reading can be fun!

I believe that the most important thing I can do for my students is help them become lifelong readers.

My twenty-two third grade students attend a Title I urban public school. Many do not have access to books at home. This means that the only books my students can read are books that I can provide for them at school. Due to the budget constraints at my school, some of the books that I currently have in my classroom are very old. Many of the books are literally falling apart at the bindings. It isn't a surprise that these old, dog-eared books don't entice my students. There are so many exciting new non-fiction titles available for young readers, but my students only have access to books that were old when I was a child. The information in a lot of the books is out-of-date, and most of them do not have colorful photos or interesting layouts.

My Project

With these new books, you will help me infuse a burst of new energy into my students' reading lives. I carefully picked out books that I know that my students will love to read. These are the exciting, high interest books that my students need to tempt them to spend time reading instead of watching TV or playing their video games. I allow my students to borrow books to read at home, provided that they are responsible about bringing them back in good condition, but the books that they take home need to be interesting if the children are actually going to read them. Therefore, I picked books that I know align with my students' interests, such as books about the environment and endangered animals, sports, cooking, military history, and technology. Many of the books I chose are oversize, full-color books with page layouts that are dense with photos, diagrams, and text. My students will spend hours studying these colorful, informative page spreads.

Your generous support will make a huge difference for my students this year and in future years to come.

I am passionate about teaching and providing opportunities for the underprivileged children in my city. I want every one of my wonderful students to succeed and I know that they have to become readers to do this. Please help me put exciting new non-fiction books into the hands of my students. I promise they will be read and reread for many, many years!
