This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students go to a Title I school where 80% or more are on free or reduced price lunch.

This being so, they appreciate things even more. My students love math! Their favorite time of day is when we do "Build" centers. They get to play fun math games and work together as a team. One of their favorite activities is doing number bonds and making number sentences with stampers. My students are working hard this year learning to read, write, gaining increased number sense and becoming global learners. They're also learning about positive attitudes and how to be part of a team.

My Project

When students don't read or practice skills they've learned in first grade, they may go backward. The Scholastic Summer Reading Grade 1 Heath & Wellness Packs will help my students avoid the summer slide. I will send a pack home with each student so they may continue to read over the summer. Each pack also includes a journal for students to be able to write about what they are reading and keep them thinking over the summer.

Many of my students don't have access to grade level appropriate books at home so this would be the perfect way to provide these books to my students to prepare them for second grade.

Each of my students will have a pack of 8 books on health and wellness topics which will teach them about such topics as growing, animals, and eating healthy. These are important concepts for students to know.

The books and journal will allow them to increase their fluency, comprehension, and decoding skills. My students will be able to read through the summer which will get them ready for second grade.
