No Such Thing as a Kid Who Hates Reading!

Help me give my students a class set of a highly motivating novel.

My Students

My fifth graders come from a rural area in western Pennsylvania. They are a highly motivated group as many of them come from large, faming families who certainly know the meaning of hard work. Many of them are either struggling or non readers which is why I strive to get high interest, motivating, books in their hands.

As an ELA teacher, I live the words of author James Patterson when he said, "There is no such thing as a kid who hates reading, there are just kids who love reading and kids who are reading the wrong books and we need to help them find the right books!"

After completing our first book together this year, it was evident that my students CAN and actually WANT to read more! Unfortunately, our school district does not have the funding to provide us with a full class set of novels. I'm applying for this grant to get the "right" books in my students' hands!

My Project

As the ability to read and comprehend non-fiction texts has become an emphasis in our curriculum, I have searched for valuable teaching tools to use in my classroom.

By providing these novels, each student will have the opportunity to become immersed in a highly motivating, educational, and relevant novel.

I will teach multiple PA Common Core Standards throughout the text and students will have the opportunity to practice useful comprehension strategies throughout the reading of this authentic text.

As our district does not have the funding for new class sets of novels, I (and they!) would be thrilled to bring each student a copy of this worthy resource.
