My Students
My class is a 12:1:1 classroom. We currently have 10 students, 1 paraprofessional, 1 medical paraprofessional, and 1 classroom teacher. We represent Haiti, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Africa. My students are an excited group with a range of disabilities. We have students with ADD, ADHD, Aspergers, Epilepsy, Emotional Disability, English Language Learners, Speech and Language Impairments and those who have a Learning Disability. In this classroom, we don’t let these disabilities limit our potential to reach our goals. This is a self-contained bridge class for 7th and 8th graders.
My class has faced so much personal adversities that should have discouraged them from having high expectations like, losing one or both parents, medical setbacks, violence, homelessness, living in shelters and bullying, but they push through because they want to be change agents.
Some of my students will be first-generation high school students in their family and others first generation high school graduates. This classroom allows the students to learn without restrictions and to see themselves in a positive light.
My Project
Being diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, Aspergers, Emotional Disability and being an English Language Learners come along with a lot of stress and anxiety. Many of my students feel over whelmed before they make it through the classroom doors just by these labels and then have to push it all aside to learn. We want to provide a safe space for our student so that they are able to work through stress and anxiety and be successful.
By funding this project our scholars will be able to use the stress balls to help them relieve stress and be motivated to try; the journals will provide an outlet for our students to express themselves by writing or drawing their thoughts/feelings; and the Fidgets will help them to calm their nerves and will help them to focus.
