My Students

Were you bullied as a child? I was, and sadly, so were many of my students. Some still are. Bullying can leave scars that last a lifetime. Something needs to be done and I think I might have a way to stop some of the pain.

I work at a Title I Middle School in beautiful Brooklyn, NY where I teach Language Arts to an AMAZING group of 8th Graders.

Many of the students were impacted by the events of Hurricane Sandy and are still trying to recover. I am constantly on the lookout for nonfiction that is relevant to their lives, yet interesting. The material also needs to be challenging and cause them to think about things they are familiar with in a new and different way. Several years ago, I was lucky enough to come across a book by Townsend Press called "Bullying in Schools" that fit these criteria. Last year I was lucky enough to receive funding to provide each of my students with their own copy of this powerful book to keep and the result was amazing!

My Project

I am requesting 100 copies of the book "Bullying in Schools" for my students. During October, which is National Bullying Prevention month, my classes and I immerse ourselves in the topic of bullying and how to cope with the many difficulties this causes. While we do have a set of books that I share in class, past experience has shown me that MANY of my students benefited from having time to reflect on this book in private, as well, by taking this book home and sharing it with others. Prior to Hurricane Sandy, MANY of my students did not have a vast supply of books at home to read and this was only made worse when the storm destroyed many of their school supplies with flooded basements. Having this book will not only be a valuable resource in and of itself, but it will also, in many cases, help to rebuild personal libraries.

Bullying is becoming more and more prevalent in our society - AND IT MUST BE STOPPED!

Even though school budgets continue to be strained, I refused to let my children go without the books they need to help make a difference in their lives. I know there are many people who want to support public education and help students lead better lives. Here is your chance to help make a positive change in the future of our students. Don't let someone else take away your chance to make a difference.
