Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are intelligent, thoughtful and full of questions! They are part of our school's Biomedical STEM Academy, and most plan on pursuing a career in the medical field. Their innate curiosity leads them to ask great questions and they come to school ready to truly learn, rather than just go through the motions.

Many students in my classroom come from families that struggle financially, and are unable to buy basic school supplies, not to mention any extra materials.

Our school is located in a suburb east of Los Angeles. The more affordable housing prices attract families that make a lower income; many families are relatively recent immigrants to the US.

Each child in my classroom brings a unique point of view, and the diversity of our classroom makes it an exciting place to learn. They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have students that truly care about their education and are willing to work every day in pursuit of their future goals.

My Project

These books will enhance the cross-curricular learning that my co-teachers and I use to better engage our students. When our students continually see content reiterated and reinforced between our classrooms, they are more likely to see it as both relevant and important, and thus interact with their learning more effectively.

With these new books, my students will be able to learn about the very personal, evocative story behind many of the medical treatments that are considered essential today.

For this particular unit, students will learn both about the personal history of Henrietta Lacks--an African American woman whose cancer cells were taken without her permission--and the medical impact of those cells, which were used by scientists to develop countless medical treatments, including the polio vaccine, cloning, and gene mapping. Linked learning activities will be coordinated between the English, biology, and math classes. This engaging, dynamic text will make the students' learning come alive.
