These books will enhance the cross-curricular learning that my co-teachers and I use to better engage our students. When our students continually see content reiterated and reinforced between our classrooms, they are more likely to see it as both relevant and important, and thus interact with their learning more effectively. With these new books, my students will be able to learn about the very personal, evocative story behind many of the medical treatments that are considered essential today. For this particular unit, students will learn both about the personal history of Henrietta Lacks--an African American woman whose cancer cells were taken without her permission--and the medical impact of those cells, which were used by scientists to develop countless medical treatments, including the polio vaccine, cloning, and gene mapping. Linked learning activities will be coordinated between the English, biology, and math classes. This engaging, dynamic text will make the students' learning come alive.
