Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse mix of energetic, intelligent, and curious 9 and 10-year-olds who need resources to truly excel. My school is an urban, high-poverty school that strives to do what's best for the kids, but we often don't have the budget for the "extras", and by "extras" I mean basic supplies, books, technology, field trips, etc. These are the things that can make a significant positive impact on student learning and growth. Many of my students have had traumatic backgrounds, have learned English as a second language (ESL), or have families that struggle to simply put food on the table. Despite these challenges, they thrive when presented with the opportunity to do so.
My intention is to work each and every day to help close the opportunity gap facing the wonderful students in my classroom.
My Project
My school has implemented a blended learning model and students spend time every day using adaptive, research-based computer programs to personalize their learning. To utilize the programs effectively, students need additional instructional technology, quality headphones, to not only hear the audio portion of the program but also to block out distractions from students working collaboratively at other centers. Through a DonorsChoose.org project a few years ago, I was able to get headphones for the students. However, some of them (unfortunately) are now in disrepair. Now some students have headphones, and some do not. The students that don't, get frustrated when they are trying to work hard and focus, but can't do so because of the activity around them. Through no fault of their own, their learning is disrupted. These headphones will help students to concentrate and keep distractions from irritating them and it will be a more conducive environment for students to learn and be successful.
