My classroom is a self-contained 5th-grade classroom where students learn academic content, but most importantly, how to be responsible for their own learning. In addition to math, reading, writing, science, and social studies, my students learn computer skills, practice study skills and discover how they learn best.
Sitting comfortably during lessons is so important to student learning!
Due to the space limitations in my classroom, and a large number of students, many times students sit on the carpeted floor in the front of the room to be able to see the board better, take notes, and interact with our lessons. They also like to work on the floor during independent work time. I would like to be sure they can do their work comfortably while on the floor.
My Project
During independent and/or group work times, my students choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently they are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: sitting on the couch, laying on the floor with a pillow, using a pillow at their desk, or sitting on the floor. Sitting on the floor with no support for their body is not comfortable. I'd like to make this seating option better for my students by providing them with lap desks.
Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. I have noticed many students are not comfortable sitting on the floor without anything to support their learning materials (notebooks, chromebooks, books). These lap desks would allow them to work in comfort alone, or in cooperative groups, away from their larger classroom desks.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional comfortable seating options to make more effective learning choices. The lap desks are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom.
