On the inside we are all the same. We have a skeleton! No bones about it, learning about our bodies and the systems that support them is fascinating to students.
This dynamic group of 3rd graders attend Maine's most ethnically diverse school.
The school's amazing international student body represents 30 nationalities! Within the school, 45% of the 420 students are English Language Learners, and almost 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
The 24 students in my room represent a tremendous snapshot of this diversity. Many of them lived in refugee camps, some were fleeing challenging political situations in their homelands, and others are here with their families seeking greater opportunities. Their unique perspectives are something I strive to highlight and use as a learning tool. Our diversity is seen as an asset as we capitalize upon our knowledge and build on our strengths.
My Project
Mr. Bones, our beloved skeleton and classroom mascot, recently fell down and has become irreparable. This has left a void, both as a source of fun and as a springboard to learning about our bodies.
By providing my students with a skeleton, you are helping to develop healthy humans who are knowledgeable about their bodies.
The skeleton and the other resources in this project will allow our students to visualize difficult concepts only attainable through hands-on activities. Reading about the human body is no comparison to being able to feel and see the inner workings. Our students will be able to know what we are like on the inside.
Not only will students learn about the skeletal system, "Mr. Bones" helps bring other concepts to life by playfully displaying rules, putting on themed costumes, and even letting students dress him up. He is a trusted teacher sidekick and helps us all understand that skeletons are not that scary...everybody has one.
By making a donation you are making a difference. Not only will they see how a skeleton gives our bodies support, they will see how supportive humans can be for each other through your generosity.
