My Students

My students are 9th and 10th graders who attended a high poverty, low performing high school in Delaware. Their school has been identified as high needs for longer than most of them have been alive.

Many of them have experienced little success in school and in response have developed a myriad of strategies for avoiding the embarrassment and shame of further failure.

Consequently, reaching them poses a real challenge because while most want to do well in school, for many the perceived risks by far outweigh the rewards of success. In many cases they understand that education is vital to future success but they do not know how to engage in their education in a meaningful way.

My Project

As much as schools try to incorporate diversity into the classroom, English curriculum around the country are still far often dominated by the works of dead white men. While these great writers have much to offer our students, so do the works of writers from other cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Nnedi Okorafor is a prime example. Her genre-defying works bring together traditional aspects of fantasy with traditional African myths and glimpses at real-life modern Africa (something most of my students have never seen).

Okorafor's works are magical, majestic, and meaningful - the perfect learning tools for students of varying levels and interests - so I am requesting a second class set of Binti so both of my Honors English courses can read the book at the same time.

Binti is a fantastic coming of age tale about a young African girl who must make the painful choice between preserving her tribe's traditions and embracing a future that will change her in ways she cannot begin to anticipate. Set in the far future, this book is filled with amazing imagery, strange and unfamiliar creatures, and moral lessons told from a perspective not often found in western works.

The vast majority of my students learned a lot from reading Binti this year and I would like to build on that success by allowing more students to have access to the book in the future.
