Ninth Grade Africa and the Americas Empires Museum Project

Help me give my students clip boards for our project on African/South American civilizations. We spend a month doing research and going to museums to help kids learn about these once powerful empires.

My Project

Students take a trip to the Natural History Museum in NYC to see what museums are like and how artifacts are displayed. Most of our students have never been to a museum. Once students visit the museum, they do research on African and South American empires and civilizations. After their research they construct artifacts of their own - some written and some physical. We then place all artifacts in the schools library and create a museum of our own. Students from the entire ninth grade participate in this project, so our library is full of amazing and creative projects that exemplify certain aspects of each civilization. Once all "artifacts" are displayed in the library, students walk the library as if it were a museum and take notes on what they see, what objects were used for and how they show culture and importance to archaeologists. Finally, students write and essay using the artifacts in place of documents, allowing them to see how the essays we learn to write can be applied to various things, not just famous written works.

Students need these clipboards for most of this project, as their museum trip and library trip consists of walking and taking notes simultaneously.

We have tried to get school funding for these materials and have not been successful. These clipboards will make learning and being interactive so much easier and more enjoyable for students.

Thank you for your time and generosity!
