Ninja Note Readers- Orchestra Literacy Project

My Project

I teach approximately 130 students in 4th through 6th grade who are passionate about playing their instruments in orchestra. I frequently hear that orchestra is their favorite part of the day and they wish they could stay for longer than their half an hour twice a week.

One of the most challenging concepts for my students to master is reading music notes on the staff.

Due to time restrictions, I have had to get very creative with different ways to motivate students to learn the notes on the staff and apply this to their performance music.

I am trying a new approach called Note Reading Ninja. Modeled after a karate class, students pass through different levels of note-reading exercises. Each time they pass a level, they receive a "belt" to display on their cases. This year, I would like to upgrade the belt system for more efficient use of class time. I would like to use these beads to attach to the hooks that can then be attached to the students' instrument cases. The beads allow the students to individually track their progress and they stay motivated because as they progress, the beads become more interesting and diverse. The storage bins will help to keep our materials organized in class and the special beads are to signify a mastery of each string. After students have mastered all four strings, they will be awarded with a ninja because then they are note-reading Ninja Masters.
