Art is the one language that unites us all and it is essential to the growth of all children. It is known that the developmental benefits of art encompass the following areas: language development, decision making, motor skills, and cultural awareness, to name a few.
The students at my school are inquisitive and are interested in exploring the art and artists of other cultures.
Especially now that our school is becoming more culturally diverse due to an influx of students that have arrived from Puerto Rico, following Hurricane Irma. The students are eager to learn about new artists, their backgrounds and their art style.
I am one of the art teachers at my elementary school. We are located in Winter Garden which is in Central Florida. This project will affect all of the students in my school. The children range from Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade. This is a community school of over 1000 students. All of our students benefit from the language that unites us all, Art.
The students at my school will have the opportunity to explore other cultures via the visiting art exhibition featuring the work of Mexican Artist Frida Kahlo. Students will have the opportunity to see their own framed art work on display alongside the work of Frida Kahlo on this "museum night". Every student from Kindergarten through 5th grade will have a piece of art on exhibition.
This project will impact over one thousand students and will allow them the opportunity to explore the universal language that is art.
This experience will awaken an interest in cultural diversity through the visual arts as well as nurture an appreciation for our similarities. Students will have the opportunity to see that knowledge about our world and its inhabitants can be imparted through images and the art making process.
