Nifty Non-Fiction

My Students

Our student body is 85% African American, with the remaining 15% being a combination of Asian, Latino, and Caucasian students. These students are excited about education, and many are driven by family members from all over the city just so they can be a part of our great tradition. About 60% of our students live at or below the poverty level.

We are a Title I school, with 25% of our students being visually impaired.

My second grade students are exceptionally bright, and they need to be captivated, challenged, and motivated to achieve.

My Project

My students need Time for Kids magazine in order to dive deep into non-fiction text and explore current events. The average child in the United States spends roughly 4 hours and 29 minutes a day watching TV, 2 hours and 31 minutes listening to music, and 1 hour and 13 minutes playing video games. And how much of their leisure time to do they spend reading nonfiction? Less than 4 minutes a day. Therefore, having a subscription to Time For Kids will enable my students to get exposure to non-fiction text, while learning about current events.

The new Common Core language arts and literacy standards places more emphasis on reading nonfiction—starting with an equal emphasis on literature and informational text in elementary school.

At nearly all grade levels, students are expected to develop research skills across content areas with a strong focus on nonfiction, including literary nonfiction; essays; biographies and autobiographies; journals and technical manuals; and charts, graphs, and maps. Furthermore, exposure to non-fiction text enables our students to become college and career ready. Students would use these texts to research and explore topics in Science and Social Studies, helping them to become more avid and purposeful readers.
