My students need books, software, and a few pieces of camera equipment to make and produce our school news each week, and work on their own short film projects.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine yourself as a 13 year old. You have big dreams and a lot of talent. You're handed a great camera, and are tasked with creating video projects for the whole school. The only thing holding you back... the skills, training, and supporting materials to let your creativity run wild!
I teach a group of the most amazing 7th and 8th grade students in the city of Columbus.
Most come from low income backgrounds, and all live in urban settings. Our students are avid consumers of media and film, but for many the idea of making their own films doesn't seem possible. Although they have seen the endless examples of shaky, grainy, impossible to understand cellphone videos on YouTube, the thought of producing a professional quality video of their own is overwhelming.
My Project
The resources I have requested provide all of the supports and materials that our students will need to let loose their creative energy and write, produce, film, edit, and distribute their own digital video creations. Our school was fortunate enough to receive a few digital cameras to film a weekly school newscast, but none of the tools and resources to utilize them to their fullest potential. Our dream is to use these cameras for more than just the news, but to expand their creativity to short films that students write and create themselves. The books and instructional aids will give students the background knowledge and creativity prompts (story ideas) to start planning and writing their projects. The equipment like the lights, green screen, and microphone will help the students in filming a high quality product. And the software and computer accessories will allow them to turn their raw footage into a finished film that we can share with the whole school!
These materials will give students a voice and a vision.
Putting these tools in the hands of our students will allow them to access a medium that many perceive to be too complicated or technical to tackle! It will unleash their creativity, and provide an outlet to explore their world in a way they never thought possible!
