Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My scholars come from various walks of life into my classroom. Some know little about who they are or what they want to be, but they come with a desire to learn and improve themselves. Although many have little in terms of finance, they come with a wealth of enthusiasm and curiosity. I hope to keep those fires burning long after they leave my classroom.
I work at a Title I school in Texas where 92% of our scholars are low socioeconomic status and 84% are At-Risk.
I do not want those statistics to define my school and scholars. I know and believe that the faculty and staff at my school are working relentlessly to see our scholars succeed. We know that each individual has the potential for greatness and we are pushing them to heights they never thought imaginable. Upon graduation, our scholars should represent the pillars of pride, respect, and responsibility as they continue their educational journey.
My Project
We are extremely proud of our scholars headed to college and we want to provide them with some basics as they head out and become young adults. We wanted to create health care and hygiene packages for them as they start up their freshman year, that way they can focus on their academics without worrying about the basics. We did our best to include basic goods like laundry detergent, a basket, and fabric softners so they can use these without having to spend their own money to purchase them. We also want to provide our graduating seniors with shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, and deodorant to minimize their costs for the first few months of school. Throughout this school year, some of our scholars that may not have the financial support have been given body soap, deodorant, and other supplies from our community liaison, but they will not be eligible to receive it once they graduate. Many of our scholars will be the beneficiaries of scholarships for academics and/or athletics, but will have to pay for their basic necessities out of their own pocket. We hope that this supply basket will help them as they transition to a new stage in their academic career.
We know that our scholars can achieve at the collegiate level and we want them to know that they will always have our support.
These supplies will not only provide them with a few months worth of goods, but also be a constant reminder that we are so overjoyed that they are bettering themselves. We hope that they can take this dedication and support and one day return the favor to another generation of scholars.
