My Students
Imagine living in a poverty stricken area and never learning more about the whole world surrounding you...only knowing the gang ridden streets in which you have grown up. My students need to see a wider view of the world in which they live beyond the neighborhood park and local convenience store.
My students range from upper middle class students who have had a wealth of opportunities to gain background knowledge (about 15% of our students) to those who live in homes with little or no income (about 60% of our students).
Their idea of a big weekend is going to the local mall 15 minutes away. Many of these children have never left the county and don't know what lies beyond the county line. Many of our students are bused from the inner city to our fairly rural school well outside their neighborhood. They have the desire to learn more, but don't know how vast their world really is.
My Project
Weekly Reader Current Events and Time for Kids will help my students learn more about events going on in the world surrounding their little piece of the globe. It will give them a chance to study places they have never seen, learn about things that are occurring there, and see how those things compare and contrast with their lives. Through Thinking Maps, students will be able to use the 8 modes of thinking to look at global issues and events. Then, at the end of each month, students will be participating in the Newzbrain challenge, a national on-line current events quiz bowl.
Students need to see beyond their part of the world and to learn about events and issues that trickle down to effect everyone.
Our students need to become globally aware of issues that effect the world in which they live.
