My students range from upper middle class students who have had a wealth of opportunities to gain background knowledge (about 15% of our students) to those who live in homes with little or no income (about 60% of our students). Their idea of a big weekend is going to the local mall 15 minutes away. Many of these children have never left the county and don't know what lies beyond the county line. Many of our students are bused from the inner city to our fairly rural school well outside their neighborhood. They have the desire to learn more, but don't know how vast their world really is.
