This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever seen third grade news broadcasters? Well, the third graders in my class actually research, create, and present news stories (from six categories), similar to the nightly news that we watch in our homes. We need additional laptop computers for success in each phase of this project.

My students are third grade gifted, high achieving, and average achieving students.

I have an equal number of both male and female students. They are inquisitive, deep thinkers who need to go deeper then basic textbook curriculum. They attend a gifted, high achieving magnet school.

My Project

With new laptop computers, my students will have immediate access to the research portion of their New Spot presentations via the Internet. New laptops would allow our students to take advantage of "Time For Kids", "Scholastic News", and other sources that promote .children's access to current news around from our world. Since students will be required to present News Spots from six areas (International, National, Sports/heath/fitness, Nature, Entertainment, and Book Review), proper research is critical. After the research has been done, students will use the word processing system on the laptop to record their data and type up their stories. They will learn to use all of the editing and publishing features on the laptop. Finally, the laptop will be used to play back their video-taped News Spots through our digital projector. Observing their News Spots on screen will provide the opportunity for class discussion and peer critiquing for suggestions and clarification.

This project is extremely important as it opens up the world of current events to children and facilitates great writing and oral skills.

Each year, we are usually able to culminate our New Spots on one of the local studio's sets. At the studio students are allowed to sit on the set of the "real" news and broadcast through their sophisticated system. The new laptop will make our News Spots amazing from start to finish!
