All children can learn if we just open our eyes to see them, open our ears to hear them, and open our hearts to understand all of them. I teach all subjects areas. My room is a cross categorical room. The students are special education-grades 3,4,5,&6 with learning and behavioral disabilities, cognitive delayed, and traumatic brain injury. All are between 1 - 3 grade levels below their peers in Reading and Math, but they try everyday to increase Reading and Math skills to prevent embarrassment in front of their peers. All are African-American. 2 girls and 9 boys from low income households. Most are single parent - mother.
Since I teach a predominately self contained classroom, I have to prepare my students for inclusion with their age equivalent peers in their most productive academic areas. Many are lacking in self esteem because of their Reading difficulties. By increasing their reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and writing skills, they will be more likely to be involved in the discussions and completing writing and reading assignments.
Through the use of the Weekly Readers and the America rug, my students will be updated on the latest events in the world and America. The Weekly Readers also helps to develop reading, grammar, vocabulary critical thinking skills and will give them a voice in discussions in the classroom. Using the map will aid them in recognizing and memorizing their states and capitals as well as giving them a place to read the Weekly Readers. They like to sit on the floor when we are completing certain projects in Science and Social Studies.
Many talk about "No Child Left Behind". Being a teacher of special needs children, I have witnessed the special needs child being left behind. I value my position to educate our children. Whose's to say that one day, we will look back on this experience when one of my special needs children will be a great inventor, novelist, speaker or artist, etc. Thank you for your contribution.
