News Magazines in the Classroom!

Help me give my students subscriptions to Scholastic News to learn about current events and to Science Spin to see real-world applications of science!

My Students

My students are engaged learners who are excited by new materials and information!

We are an urban public school nestled in a neighborhood, but our students come from all over the city.

We serve a diverse student body with many languages and cultures represented! Our small class sizes and student-centered teaching help our students achieve their potential. We believe that our students should learn about our community and our community should be excited about the work of our students and school.

My Project

Some of my students have a limited knowledge of current events, while others are motivated to read and learn more about the world around them. My goal is to use these tools to ignite curiosity and even inspire debate! Students will read Scholastic News and Science Spin magazines and respond through discussion and writing. We will also study the articles to learn about the components of nonfiction writing, which will help us with our own expository writing.

This project will broaden my students' perspectives by helping to inform them of current events.

In addition, it will increase the amount of nonfiction texts students read, which is both a personal goal, as well as a goal of the Common Core. These materials will help students explore personal interests, as well as expand their perspectives.
