This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a wonderful group of fourth graders who love hands-on learning! We are a Title I Priority School in an urban community. The students in our school are considered economically disadvantaged and all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite the many obstacles my young children face they are all committed to learning more everyday. Many of the children have been in classes together since kindergarten creating many interesting, sibling-like relationships. They both support and challenge each other every day.
My students come to school with the goal of becoming a better reader.
They listen intently during read-aloud and participate enthusiastically during shared reading time. These children are constantly grabbing new books from our classroom library to read individually and with their peers. This excitement for reading is a love I hope to ingrain in my students so they become life-long readers.
My Project
Scholastic News Magazines makes non-fiction text interesting to students by providing them with articles on current events. Each magazine has a quiz to test students' reading comprehension. Each magazine issue comes with activities that the teacher can use to facilitate learning even further. Magazines encourage all students to read by giving them a different medium than your typical book.
By acquiring issues at three different grade levels I will be able to meet the needs of all the students in my classroom.
I have a wide range of reading abilities in my classroom and these magazines will help me teach each student skills that they need to further their abilities.
