This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine coming to a new country as a teenager, not knowing the native language, and going to the school library to only find thick books like Twilight, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Harry Potter. These are the books my beginning ESL students are able to check out.

My beginning ESL students have been in the country less than 3 years.

Some have just arrived from countries all around the world. From Tanzania, Iraq, Burma, Nepal, and El Salvador, all the students are in desperate need of practicing their reading skills on books on their level. The majority of the students are refugees and don't have the means to even go to the city's public school library. They are in desperate need of reading materials on their grade level to improve quickly as possible their reading skills.

My Project

These materials includes books and a tracking system to contribute to our classroom library that will help give these newcomer students materials to practice their growing English. Not only will it give them material they can read, it will help them track their growth as a reader. Both our classroom library and school library do not have many materials to accommodate their needs, and these books will do just that.

I'm scared for these students the most out of the students I teach.

They will all most likely move on to high school, whether they are ready or not, and their English skills are still very much at a lower elementary school level. These books will greatly improve their English literacy quickly.
