I teach 8th-12th graders at a public school in an urban setting. My high school is a high-need school with about 85% of the student population being African American and 60% of the students coming from low-income families. My students are part of a supportive learning environment where interactive learning is used constantly. I love watching their teamwork and scientific inquiry skills grow over the school year. We have had a STEM program at our school for six years now and we have added more students to our program each year. I am the STEM coordinator, and I also teach AP Biology, both roles require a computer with high processing speed and storage. I'm excited for this upcoming school year and the chance to reach more students with science and technology - and a new laptop would really help with that.
I would like a newer laptop to provide my students with newer instructional materials (that require a newer operating system.) I teach five biological science courses including AP Biology and use my personal laptop to create all of the instructional material, and then display that work for the students during class and labs. I have used for old Mac computer for seven years with great success, and I have been able to share many exciting STEM programs and apps that are Mac specific. I participate in professional development for science, reading, and critical thinking skills online, which requires a computer with increased processing speed and storage. Professional development provides me with opportunities to enhance my students content and laboratory skills, along with refreshing my own skills. In addition, AP Biology teachers participate in online professional learning networks (PLNs) that are constantly being updated to reflect the AP Biology exam and the challenges and needs of our students. I am excited to participate in more webinars and use the knowledge I gain to make more relevant and meaningful learning opportunities for my students.
