New Year-New Reading Goals!

Help me give my students engaging word study centers and activities to use in small reading groups.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of learners who are excited to come to school and learn each day. Many students have the goal for the new year to become better readers.

My students are currently at varying reading and ability levels.

Several students are working hard to close learning gaps from kindergarten. I would like to meet the needs of all of my students in reading and help them to read at or above grade level by the end of the year. To accomplish this, I would like to implement more hands on word study activities for my emergent readers.

My school is a low-income/high poverty school. I would like to provide my students with dependable resources and supplies when they do not have many things they can depend on outside of school. Our school is in a rural area with students coming from lower income families. My school services a large EC population and has 78% of students receiving free or reduced rate lunch. I know by providing the appropriate resources that my diverse learners need, will help all students to reach their goals in reading this new year.

My Project

All of my students want to be successful readers this year. Some students are on track to meet their reading goals and others will need additional support. During our literacy block, students are either in small reading groups with the teacher or engaged in literacy stations. Having engaging activities is vital to the success of our stations. If students are engaged in what they are doing, not only are they enjoying their station but learning and reviewing skills taught. It is important for students to independently work so the teacher can meet with small groups to meet individual needs. The literacy activities will help to ensure learning and engagement. Students independently working on tasks at their reading level will not only increase their reading abilities but also allow classmates to receive small group instruction.
