My students are 2nd graders learning in a dual language classroom in NY. Approximately half of my students are native English speakers, while the other half are native Spanish speakers. Many of the students in my classroom are English Language Learners. Our program is extremely diverse, and every child is eligible for free lunch.
These children come to school ready to learn, with the language of instruction alternating between English and Spanish each day.
They are eager readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and leaders, who are becoming equipped to achieve academic and social success in today's global community.
My Project
My students love to read and especially love discovering new books. They look forward to the days they get to go "book shopping" and find something new to read from our classroom library. Our library is bilingual, with half the books in English and the other half in Spanish.
While we have plenty of quality English books on hand, our Spanish selection could use some growing.
In particular, we could use more high-interest nonfiction books as well as some new series titles with excting characters and plot lines.
I have chosen these books with a specific lens toward my students' reading levels and interests. My hope is that these new Spanish books will allow them to continue to foster their love of reading!
