New Tigers Basketballs

My Students

Our school is located in a large urban school district in a very low-income area. Uniquely our students don't act like they don't have everything that they need and show pride in everything they do. Our school community is so special because the staff and students try all they can to make our school a place where they can feel safe, grow and learn regardless of the struggles beyond our walls. My students are the best students in our city.

My Project

All of my students receive Title I lunches and have very little when they come to us each day. I have had the unique privilege of coaching basketball. I use the program as a mentorship and safe haven for at risk youth.

Having new supplies for our students shows them that we value them enough to put in the work to provide them with new things.

New basketballs would go a long way with helping develop their basic fundamentals, technical skills and tactical skills.

First, their basic fundamentals: Start by teaching the basic mechanics of the game. The essential skills that establish a foundation for success- like triple threat position, from shooting, defensive stance, and pivoting.

Next, technical skills: Move onto the common basketball task players need to master-shooting, passing, ball handling, rebounding and defense.

Lastly, tactical skills: Finally, we move onto the decision and actions players make in game situations, to help give their team an advantage over an opponent. For example, knowing how to make a back door cut, execute a pick and roll, or come over from the weak side to take a charge.

It's very evident that these students lack guidance, support and positive role modeling in their lives, therefore the basketball program and relationship with my students are very important.
