My Project

After eight years in the K-2 life skills classroom, I am moving to 2-4 special education self-contained class. While many things will be different with my teaching this year, one thing will not change. I have many hungry students. I have kids who come to school without breakfast, and sometimes without dinner the night before. Sometimes they arrive late and get no breakfast. Hungry kids can't learn. Before I can worry about academics, I need to fill basic needs.

As part of my daily schedule, I always include a snack time which helps get students through until lunch and continue learning without growling stomachs.

This project asks for a variety of snack foods for daily snack time (because often parents cannot provide snacks for the students at school, which means snack time comes out of the teacher's pockets). Chips, cookies, pretzels, fruit snacks, pudding, cereal bars, and more will provide a daily snack, as well as fill-in for those students who did not eat breakfast and may not get dinner. As a school, we often send home bags of food or stick snacks in backpacks for those students that might not get dinner.

My students are special because they work hard to learn despite the many challenges that they face in their daily life both in and out of school. I do my best to help meet their basic needs to make sure they can maximize their learning during the school day.
