Our school includes a large variety of students from various countries all over the world. One hundred percent of the students at my school receive free or reduced price lunch, and we are a school wide recipient of Title I funds.
One of my favorite parts of my job is seeing the change that my students undergo over the course of the year.
I am fortunate enough to see kids develop ways to express kindness each and every day. They use manners that weren't present in August. I have seen students who loathed reading turn into book lovers. A great part is hearing students say that math is their favorite subject because that was not true for me as a child. My classroom is full of faces and personalities that will impact our future world. As a teacher, I believe it is my job to do everything I can to make sure that impact will be a positive impact.
My Project
My students who do not receive intervention services are in my classroom for almost one hour a day while I teach a group of emerging readers for 45 minutes. The students who are in my room and not in my group participate in student-led novel studies. Each student has a job and task to accomplish in the group. One may be the superstar summarizer who facilitates a discussion on summarizing the chapter read. Another member might be an imaginative illustrator who facilitates the discussion on what everyone visualized as they were reading together. We also have a character analyst who facilitates discussion of what traits we would assign to the character based on textual evidence.
These book sets would be a welcome addition so that our student-led novel study groups can continue with new books to provide student engagement.
Reading is such an important life skill. In school, reading skills are used in every subject area including math! By receiving these sets of books, students will build an interest of reading because it will be enjoyable. If reading is enjoyable, they'll do it more often. By reading things they enjoy and want to read, students will be practicing all the phonics and true reading patterns while applying comprehension strategies as well. These books would be used daily and rotated among groups so the use would be amazing and consistent!
