Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher at a high poverty school, I am always looking for ways to give my students the materials they need to be successful in a rigorous and challenging learning environment. My students have needs that may not be typical of your average classroom student.
These students have a desire to succeed, but often have many challenges standing in their way.
Many of my students have difficulty staying focused and engaged for long periods of time. Many in the class are below grade level in at least one subject; they struggle the most with paying attention during lessons. I work very hard to offer learning strategies that they will find fun and help keep them interested.
My Project
With so many students in my class still struggling to learn how to read at their grade level, it takes a lot of creative motivation to keep them engaged. This can be as simple as any writing tool other than a pencil. In my classroom, we frequently use markers, crayons, and colored pencils to circle, underline, and highlight important information in our reading.
Having new and colorful writing tools can get students excited to circle text evidence or underline context clues.
At this point in the year my supply of crayons and colored pencils is just about used up. Most students did not bring their own to start the year, and those who did are getting frustrated using dull and broken crayons.
When students have to work independently one of the biggest things that keeps them from getting their work completed is that they are looking at everything everyone around them is doing. Privacy folders are really needed by most of my students to keep distractions to a minimum when they really need to concentrate. This will also help my students who are always working their hardest and on task, by freeing them from the worry that other students are trying to look at what is on their paper.
