This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a reading specialist, I work with struggling readers in first and second grade. Reading does not come easily to many of my students. These students will become good readers, but they need a little help.
We have both academic challenges and significant socioeconomic challenges, as my school is designated as 100% free and reduced-price lunch, meaning it is categorized as "highest poverty." All students deserve the same educational opportunities, and my students are at a disadvantage.
I try to give my students quality instruction, quality materials, and a quality learning environment.
My Project
Through generous donations, my students and I just received a new kidney-shaped table. We are loving our new table - it's perfect for instructing struggling readers.
However, now we need new chairs to fit under the new table; the current chairs are too low, so students cannot reach the table when they read and write!
These new chairs will allow my students to read and write comfortably without needing to stand. Right now, they are getting up and down a lot to reach the table. This is clearly disrupting their flow of learning. Learning is already a challenge - so I want to prevent additional obstacles.
